Remember the year 1999? Did you own a mobile phone? Do you recall the show Saved
by the Bell and the character Zach Morris’ brick phone that weighed 8 pounds?!
In 1999, as a freshman, walking to class across a beautiful campus at Indiana University
in Bloomington I began to notice something new that everyone seemed to be doing.
Something that we might call “trending” today, I began to notice…
MESMERIZING TREASURES FROM EARTH
a carefully curated collection of natural minerals, gems, stones, and rocks.
With a partner that has over 40+ years of experience as a geologist and mineral dealer,
Kim Stahl has been able to glean from Stan Perry’s vast knowledge of rocks, minerals,
and crystal specimens. She has taken that appreciation and adoration, and with access

Something that we might call “trending” today, I began to notice that almost everyone
on campus was TALKING ON THE PHONE! This was, for many, their first mobile phone.
Volume and speaking levels were unbeknownst to us at the time, so everyone had
different ways of handling this and I no longer had a peaceful walk to my 7:30 am class.
This was the year that they became affordable to the masses.
At the same time I began noticing this new trend, cellular companies were approaching
my family’s farm in southern Indiana. They were looking to lease or purchase property
to put up cellular towers. Having a cellular tower constructed where I used to ride bikes
changed how I saw the landscape; it took over the horizon.
With the popularity of mobile cellular phones and huge antenna towers erected over
the landscape, my body of work explores that which, at the time, I saw as the near
future. The future with people would need to wear personal antenna towers to get
good reception. Satellite dishes as brooches and transmitters and amplifiers on our
heads or body all to assist with the bandwidth and connectivity. It seemed to me to be
something just on the horizon.
She has taken that appreciation and adoration, and with access
to his private collection, curated these mesmerizing treasures from Earth you see
displayed. The hope is that you, just like when Kim first began to study rocks, crystals,
and minerals feel the wonderment, get curious, take in the awesomeness of our planet,
see the beauty and complexity, and comprehend that this is just a small representation
of other glorious minerals and combinations yet to be seen or even discovered.
This curated display has been laid out with “economic minerals” on the terminal-facing
side. Economic Minerals are minerals of commercial value and support their local
economy. Notice how many beautiful specimens are mined from right here in Missouri
or close by from Illinois.
Specimens on the window facing side are examples of gangue minerals. Gangue
minerals are the waste material that surrounds the economic minerals. With the
expensive nature of mining minerals as well as the personal risk, miners focus on the
extraction of the economic mineral. Therefore when a mineral specimen of the gangue
variety makes it way out of the mine and with very little to no damage, has a beautiful
composition, and is either rare in color, shape, size or mineral makeup collectors, often
called Rock Hounds, will seek and pay to add these to their private collection.
